There are 2 types of mains powered smoke alarms to choose from, Photo-electric and Ionisation.

Licensed

Photo electric alarms - when smoke particles are detected in the sensing chamber, the alarm is activated. Photo electric alarms provide better detection of smouldering and flaming fires, giving early warning and providing the best chance to evacuate when the alarm is heard.

Ionisation alarms - detect invisible combustion particles which provide the fastest warning for low smoke, fast flaming fires. This gives you the best chance of evacuation when a fire is so fast smoke hasn’t had time to build up.
